CHAPTER 3: TAKE OATH WITH SYAHADAH

Dr. Yusuf al-Qaradhawi in his book Zahirah al-Ghuluw fi al-Takfir under the title of what a person enters Islam says:

The first fact or method: That people enter the religion of Islam with two words shahadah, Shahadah "There is no GOD but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." So whoever confirms the two words of Shahadah with his tongue, then he has indeed converted to Islam, and the laws of the Muslims are implemented on him, even if his heart is still a kafir. This is because we are told to judge based on the outward appearance and we leave to God the things that are hidden." He continued:

"That the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, accepted Islam whoever affirmed the two words of shahadah, and he did not wait until the time of prayer, or zakat or the month of Ramadan for example, until that person performed those obligations, then only then was he punished as a Muslim, instead it was sufficient that he believed with those obligations, and his disobedience (against those obligations) is not apparent from him." (Zahirah al-Ghuluw fi al-Takfir, pp. 31-32)

In the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him, there were various people who came to express their desire to embrace Islam, some of them with various purposes, but he never asked whether they wanted to embrace Islam for the sake of Allah or for other purposes? It is far from his majesty putting conditions to accept their Islam.

Ibn Rajab al-Hambali in Jami' al-'Ulum wa al-Hikam said: "Never did the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, impose conditions on those who came to him for them to adhere to prayer and zakat."

Anyone who observes the Sunnah of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, will see how he accepts anyone who comes to him to express his desire to embrace Islam by saying only two words of shahadah. With these two words, their blood and property are preserved.

Al-Imam al-Bukhari narrated from Abu Hurairahr.a the words of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, which means: "I was ordered to fight people, until they say "Laailahaillallah", when they say it, then their blood and wealth have indeed been saved, except by right, and their reckoning is up to God.”

In the narration of al-Imam Muslim, the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "Until they testify that there is no god but Allah and they believe in me and what I bring."

In the sahih of al-Bukhari from Anas, it is said in a marfu' manner: "Until they witness that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger."

These hadiths are a clear proof, by saying the word tawhid a person is considered to have embraced Islam because their blood and wealth are considered to have been preserved. The preservation of their blood and property shows that they are counted as Muslims, because the guarantee of preservation of blood and property is only for Muslims or non-Muslims who do not fight Muslims or who are under agreement and protection.

I WITNESS THERE IS NO GOD BUT GOD.

AND PROPHET MUHAMMAD SAW IS THE MESSENGER OF GOD
